The annual ICC Awards ceremony for the year 2008 was held at Dubai on Tuesday, September 10. The awards for this year were presented based on the performance of the players and the officials over the 12 months period, August 9,2007 to August 12,2008. Nasser Hussain,former England captain, hosted the grandeur event.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul(WI) was awarded the ICC Cricketer of the Year while Dale Steyn(SA) had his head held high carrying the Test Player of the Year.
Ajantha Mendis, the Sri Lankan carom ball bowler, carried the Emerging Player of the Year award for his explosive performance. Its two in a row for Sri Lankan Cricket Team winning the Spirit of Cricket Award for the consecutive time. Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene collected the award for leading his team in a highly spirited way.
India had a hay time at the awards ceremony bagging two awards. Indian skipper MS Dhoni added another feather to his cap winning the ODI Player of the year who marvelled with his bat throughout the season. Yuvraj Singh received the Twenty20 International Performance of the Year for his gutsy show of scoring six sixes in an over.
Its not just five in a row for Federer alone. Australian umpire,Simon Taufel, acheived the same feat after being declared the Umpire of the Year, fifth time in succession. "Watching Yuvi sixes was quite an experience" quoted the reputed Australian.
The Associate Player of the Year was won by the Netherlands allrounder Ryan ten Doeschate.
In the women's section, skipper of the England team, Charlotte Edwards, won the Women's Cricketer of the Year.
